NaNoWriMo 2015 Day 7 Survival Journal

It is Day 7, officially one week into NaNoWriMo and I am over 1/5 of the way done. It’s dodgy as heck sometimes, knowing that each day I get to write on this, and I can’t/shouldn’t miss if I want to finish in time.

There have been times, when I’m getting deeper into my story, that I wonder if this is all quite cohesive. It is during these times of doubt that perhaps a bit of what I’m experiencing rushes into my characters, or maybe it’s my characters emotions filling me with their emotion so as to better understand their individual struggles.

I was certain this chapter was going to be about Estil, but instead I introduced a POV I never thought I’d actually give, I introduced Thomas’ POV. This means I can reintroduce his POV throughout the novel now, but I don’t want to get too crazy and have like a gagillion POV’s, that would just be ridiculous.

I really need to thank my friend Dan, this week he introduced me to Lindsey Stirling, and she has had such a profound effect of “BOOM” to my writing this week. When I first listened to Evanessence I could write anything in a few minutes flat. That’s how it is with Lindsey Stirling. I’ve added her to my Natalsa of the Brim playlist on Spotify, and it’s good.

“Steady on, Bobby. Steady on.”  Ted Brautigan said that once when things were getting rough. Just steady on. I can do this.

I am 1/5 of the way FINISHED. UNNNNNNNG.

I was so worried about today’s chapter. First my dropbox failed to sync, then when actually writing my chapter tonight the tab I was on was all blank after I tabbed out. I thought I had lost everything. Thank God it was just temporarily misplaced in a description tab for a town.

I was dreading writing today’s segment. I had a worry that I was introducing too many characters too quickly, but then I was like, I can always just add filler in between what’s here now (but later) and give it a bit more padding.

Tonight was an injustice in the story, yet another one, by a group pledging to be pure. The Seekers seem to be a bunch of dickheads, and Natalsa can no longer sit idly and let them have their way with things.

Gloves are coming off, Estil will know that Natalsa survives and they will have a reckoning, it is only natural as now he has not only hurt Natalsa, but someone she cares for deeply.

I think another Estil POV is coming up. The last one was spooky. He’s a spooky guy. Can’t wait to see how he acts.

Music is such a big part of this novel. Inkubus Sukkubus, Sirenia, Johnny Cash, Dixie Chicks, Fallout Boy, Elle King, they’ve all played a part in establishing the novel thus far. Tonight, Avenged Sevenfold helped writing a particularly dark scene, a scene that I’ve rarely had to write before.

I had to channel powerlessness, fear, and sensory deprivation. I hope it doesn’t suck too much, but I won’t have to worry about how much it sucks until November is done, and revision begins. Right now, I’m struggling to not go back, piece it and take it apart bit by bit.

I must tell myself no. And most important, I must listen.

I’ve been good with not editing up until this point, and this has been good. Maybe if I revise less along the way, and just puke out the idea, I’ll be able to finish Daughter of Ter’ima once this is all said and done. Ganston deserves that much.

I’ve never fallen below minimum 1,667 words per day, and that is something over which I’m very happy. But I want to write MORE than the minimum, stay strong ; weekend is coming.

Write More. Advice of the day.
Write More.

NaNoWriMo 2015 Day 4 Survival Journal

Today was device day, the day where I inserted the external & internal motivators. I lit the fires, and set the plot into motion. Presuming the average page has 300-900 words, sometimes a bit more, sometimes a bit less, I have successfully inserted the explosion early that will propel Natalsa & Estil to action for the rest of the book.

There is the mysterious element of the Green Man’s Malady, the threat developing of Estil’s experiments in the arcane, the wonderment of how Natalsa will regain her power, and the growing presence of Seekers that Estil has at his command.

I’ve introduced several amiable characters that are deep in the story with subplots of their own, and at this time, I could easily write the novel from any of their points of view and carry the story to completion.

Natalsa, Estil, Leon, Chubbs, Thomas.
I need to introduce Penelope, but other than that, the crew is all here.

I’m so ready to write.

Tonight may be glorious.

NaNoWriMo 2015 Day 3 Survival Journal

5,660 / 50,000 Word Count

I spent the night prior taking care of my oldest daughter. She awoke screaming for “Chad! Chad!” We don’t do Dad, or Dada.

So she slept in our bed, or rather played in our room, for the better part of two hours. So sleep was minimal last night, which is why it took me so long to write today. But, I did well.

I anticipated days where I wouldn’t be able to write on time, but told myself, write first. Make the time, or else you won’t find the time. So here I am, 8:32 at night and just now finished.

I wrote on lunch, for 30 minutes. I did 15 minutes of paper draft development for characters today, and finished up right after I put the girls to bed. I told Briana, I’m going to put you on ignore until I finish this. Do you need anything from me? Art supports Life. Not the other way around, some guy said that, I can’t remember who.  Basically, take care of the family first. I stick to that as much as I can.

I met word count, yet still haven’t really exceeded it. Usually, in all my writing endeavors, it has to be ass tramp stamp of night for me to write a ton. I’ve yet to have that this NaNo…so maybe this weekend will give better results.

In my continual scouring of NaNo tips and stuff, I came across this article today, and it was a good read. There were some parts that I disregarded, as I expect you to, but then there were some parts that were sound.

This is worth the share, and for reflection.

NaNoWriMo 2015 Day 2 Survival Journal

3,847 / 50,000 Word Count

Today was rougher than yesterday. I decided to wake up at 4:50 AM to ensure I had at least one good hour of uninterrupted, focused writing, in preparation for Monday.

I reached my word count, but it felt difficult. I had to introduce 2 new characters, 3 technically. I hadn’t had any idea I needed these Off Characters, but I definitely feel they’re necessary. I will need to toy around with them to get to know them better.

So yeah, waking up at 4:50 was the worst part of the morning by far. The one thing that got my ass up an hour early was the phrase I used during the scripting of Ghost Calls.

I told myself, “You don’t want it bad enough.” when I thought, “Oh, I could hit snooze.”

It worked.

And another interesting thing that worked. Last night I was reviewing NaNo things, and found this awesome post by a NaNo’er. To overcome the first blank page, she wrote “This is my first sentence, there, this is no longer a blank page.” forgive the misquote, but this was a great idea. Many times that first blank page is daunting as hell, but what she did was great.

This is her first time writing a novel, and she has a good angle on how to get started.

Keep it up, readers. Keep it up, writers.
Just. Keep. Writing.

NaNoWriMo 2015 Day 1 Survival Journal

It’s officially NaNoWriMo 2015! It is day one, about mid-day.
I write this blog post after having completed my first bit of the required 1667 words. I overshot and came in (so far) at 2,107 words.

It was a little rough at first, and it was interesting to get to know my antagonist and seeing Natalsa interact with him the first time. I quickly saw how I might set them up as misunderstood enemies, and laid ground work for how to give them obstacles to overcome.

I’m still toying with the idea of writing a dual POV for both Natalsa, and Estil. I like the idea of every villain being the good guy of his own story, and I want to think that Estil has his reasons for being the way he is.

Natalsa has shown how she is compassionate, yet still worried about number 1, sometimes to a fault. Estil has so far shown himself to not always listen to the right people, as demonstrated by Leon’s testimony after his altercation with Natalsa.

Day 1 Done. I’m so excited!
